Foreword by Wayne Bennett
"As I have been saying for years, we need to keep leadership simple. In fact, we need to make it so simple that everyone knows how to do it well.
I have been around footy clubs for many years and during that time experienced a lot of organisations in the corporate world as well. People, including coaches and corporate leaders, keep making the same mistake. They allow things to be too complex.
It’s a busy world and only getting busier. No one has enough time to do what needs to be done. From my viewpoint, a book that says, “Here are twenty-one things to understand and do, so that you will be a better leader” is a breath of fresh air.
I make it my business to make sure that each one of my players is crystal clear about what I need them to do in order to achieve our vision. If you make it too complex, then they will fail; after all, they are only footballers! Anyone who wants to be successful in leading others needs to know exactly what to do. Road Rules for Leadership clearly sets out what people need to do for effectively influencing others.
Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “I would not give a fig for simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.” Leadership may be complex for many, but through Road Rules for Leadership, Greg has helped us to understand what we need to do.
The advice in this book is simple, practical and straightforward. Follow it and you’ll be a better leader."Wayne Bennett
